War Contingencies

During the academic year of 2022-2023, the University of Toronto hosted 200 exchange students and 5 visiting professors from Kyiv Mohyla Academy. This exchange program was supported by the Temerty Foundation, and it offered Ukrainian students and faculty an opportunity to continue their studies and research in Canada after Russia launched a full scale invasion of Ukraine.

Although the Centre for Civic Engagement will begin addressing the needs of the Ukrainian academy by offering institutional, intellectual, and financial support for students, scholars, and publicly engaged academics in Ukraine, the ongoing war and recent attacks on civilian infrastructure in Kyiv may limit the amount of institution building we can do at Kyiv Mohyla Academy in the short term.

With that said, the funding raised for the Centre for Civic Engagement at Kyiv Mohyla Academy will be used to support students and scholars in Ukraine in the first instance. But if conditions in Ukraine slow or restrict our ability to establish the Centre for Civic Engagement, the funding raised will be used to host additional Ukrainian students and scholars at the University of Toronto.
